Deleting Your Atween Account and Data
This page explains how to delete your Atween account and the data held with it. Everything it states is taken from the Privacy Policy and What Atween Collects. Where those documents say a period depends on the law rather than on us, this page says the same instead of quoting a number.
There are two routes: from inside the app, and by writing to us. Neither is behind a paywall, and you do not have to give a reason.
1. Delete your account from inside the app
Closing your account is a two-step request. The first step asks the service to admit it; the second step, after a five-second cooling-off period, is the one that deletes. Nothing is deleted before that second step, and cancelling beforehand changes nothing.
iPhone and iPad: Settings → Account → Account management → Sensitive actions → Delete account → Request account cancellation → wait out the cooling-off period → Finally confirm cancellation (irreversible).
Android: Settings → Account → Delete account, labelled “Two-step confirmation · cannot be undone” → Start deletion → Confirm cancellation.
You may say why you are leaving, and you may leave that blank. The app then shows the request number, the receipt number, when the cooling-off period ends, and the state of each of the six places the deletion has to reach: Sources and storage, Ledger projections, Training export queue, Complaints, Exports, and Understanding answers. It does not say the account is gone until the service's own receipt says so.
2. Ask us to delete it, without the app
Write to privacy@atween.app and ask us to close your account and delete its data. Send it from the email address you sign in with. That address is the only thing that ties a request to an account: signing in to Atween uses a one-time code sent to your email address, and that is the only sign-in method the service offers.
One thing follows from how we store that address, and we would rather say it than let you find out at the wrong moment. We do not store your email address. What is stored is an irreversible keyed hash of it, which lets us recognise the same account again but cannot be turned back into an address. So we can check that the address you write from belongs to an account, and we cannot look you up any other way, and we cannot write to you first — only reply to you.
What then happens:
- We check the request against the account. If the address you write from does not match one, we say so rather than delete something that was not yours.
- We carry the deletion out. A deletion propagates: the record, the derived understanding, indexes, caches, queues, export tasks, and the context assembled for later AI reads. Data you have deleted must not come back through any of those; if you ever see it come back, that is a defect and we want to hear about it.
- You get a receipt. For deletions we give you a verifiable status or a receipt, so you are not asked to take our word for it. We record the request type, its scope, when you submitted it, its status, the receipt number, the deletion watermark, and the audit record. Those logs are kept clear of your intimate content.
Complaints and appeals go to complaints@atween.app instead, so that neither queue hides the other.
3. What is deleted, and what is kept
Deleting your account deletes what you kept: your records and the times you wrote them, your corrections, the understanding derived from them, their source references, and their deletion watermarks. It also deletes the account identifier and the keyed hash of your email address, so nothing is left that recognises you.
Material you saved as this session only is already gone: that class cannot live longer than 24 hours, and that is a hard constraint in the database rather than a default a caller can extend.
Some things outlive the account, and only these:
| What is kept | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase and entitlement records — the order identifier, the product identifier, the purchase or refund status, and the store's receipt or purchase token | Tax, accounting and dispute handling. We never see your card or bank details; the stores handle payment. | As long as tax, accounting and dispute-handling law requires. We do not name a number of years here, because which rule applies is not ours to choose. These records are held in a storage domain separate from your intimate content. |
| Which agreement version you accepted, and when — together with any withdrawal and its receipt number | So that we can evidence what you agreed to, and that a withdrawal was honoured | As long as we must be able to evidence it. Held in a storage domain isolated from your content. |
| The deletion's own receipt and audit record | It is the proof the deletion happened | Kept as the record of the request. It says what was done, not what you wrote. |
Records the law requires us to retain are isolated from your content. Nothing in the list above is used to rebuild an account, and none of it contains what you wrote.
We do not use your content to train or fine-tune any model — not by default, not on an opt-in, not today — so there is no training copy of your material anywhere to have to delete.
If you simply stop using Atween, deletion still happens on its own: an account that goes 365 days without qualifying activity enters deletion, with a further 30 days of grace before that becomes final.
4. Deleting some things without closing the account
You do not have to close the account to remove something. From inside the app you can read and copy your records, export them as a package, correct them, delete individual items, withdraw a consent, and raise a complaint or an appeal. Each of these is a real endpoint in the service, not a form that reaches a mailbox.
- One record: open it and choose Delete this entry.
- One piece of derived understanding: from Data and AI interpretation, choose Delete this know-me understanding. You can also switch long-term understanding off altogether.
- Everything private, keeping the account: on Android, Settings → Data → Delete all private data, labelled “Account and shared relationship facts remain · irreversible”. Export my data sits beside it and is always free.
A settings screen is not the same as the thing actually happening. For deletion, export, withdrawal of consent, account closure, complaints, and delivery to the other person, Atween produces a verifiable status or a receipt.
